"Clearly you played a central role as guide on the book's transformational journey."
GZ, Boston

If you have a great idea you want to tell or a compelling story to share, I can help to turn your dream into a reality. I have twenty years of experience working on books that have been published by Bloomsbury, Harvard Business School Press, Houghton Mifflin, Hudson Street Books, Penguin, Plume, Random House, Rodale, and W.W. Norton. I work regularly with leaders in business, law, medicine, and the arts, often with my collaborator, Lauren Slater. (www.laurenslater.org) For a nonfiction book, I may suggest that I write a book proposal that you may then submit to agents and editors. If you have a floundering or sub-par manuscript, I can "doctor" it to publishable standards. In any case, after hearing about your project, we discuss what format and process will best fit your individual needs and how I can best commit my expertise, creativity, and time. If appropriate, I can also make sure your manuscript gets read by top-notch agents and editors in the publishing industry.

“I've found Karen’s critiques to be especially valuable. She encourages in a productive (rather than chatty fluffy empty) way that sends me back to the writing table—“

Coaching: As a writing coach, I help you to sort through your material, structure your project, and break the work down into manageable tasks with set goals and deadlines. I provide careful guidance and detailed feedback for your work-in-progress. Wherever you are in your writing, I can take you to the next level.

College Essay Coaching: My approach is process-oriented and customized to the student’s individual needs and strengths. As a professional writer I set high standards for craft, originality, and style. I bring to high school essayists an abiding love for the art and tradition of the personal essay – from Montaigne’s conversational rapport to contemporary practitioners' confessionals. Above all, the personal essay is a vehicle for the evolving self to speak directly to the reader about his or her experiences, thoughts, and beliefs. For this reason it's the perfect form for teens, especially at this crucial juncture in their lives, to genuinely communicate who they are. Skype and google docs available as well as home visits in the Boston area. Students I have coached have been accepted by Harvard, Yale, Wesleyan, University of Miami, Lehigh, and many other schools.

“….a terrific writer, editor, memoirist, and creative writing teacher, Karen Propp.”
